Title Tag SEO

It is important to have search keywords in your title of your webpage. The title of your webpage is defined by the title tag in the HTML code.

The Title tag is one of the most important factors in search engine optimization (SEO). Some SEO experts go as far as to say (and we agree) that it is the single most important aspect of SEO. Furthermore, optimizing for the title tag takes little time and is easy to do. So if you don't do anything else in regards to SEO, just take care of the title tag. If you do only one thing in regards to SEO, it should be 'SEO your Title Tags'.

Let's say that you have a webpage about "International Travel" and you want your page to come up in the search engine results whenever people search for "international travel". Then what you want to do is to have the words "international travel" in the title tag of your HTML coding.

It can be "Tips for International Travel" or "International Travel for Business", or "The Growth of International Travel", etc.

In the source code, you should see an HTML tag that starts with and ends with . Bounded within these two tags is text that would be the title of your webpage. This text is known loosely as the title tag text. This title tag text is also the text that shows up in the browser window frame and in browser tabs.

SEO Title Tag Best Practices

You should have SEO search keywords within this title tag text. In as much as possible construct the title tag text so that the keywords are at the beginning. For example, if you are optimizing your webpage for the keywords "international travel", then a title of "International Travel Tips" is preferred over the "Tips for International Travel". However, if you are optimizing for the keywords "travel tips", then you want "Travel Tips of International Travelers" rather than "International Travel Tips".

Search engines will place more weight on the words at the beginning of title than at the end of the title.

Common SEO Mistakes with Web Page Titles

It is important that you do not make the title too long. A long title will dilute the weight of the keywords. The title "International Travel Tips" is a good strong concise title. Because it is only three words, search engines will place good weighting on the words "international travel" and on "travel tips". With all other things being equal, such a title would do well when people search for "international travel" and it will do well even when people are searching for "travel tips".

In contrast, the title "What Useful Information One Should Know about in Regards to International Travel" is not good. It is bad because the important search keywords "international travel" is at the end of title. And it is bad because it has too many words, search engine algorithm has to give a weight to each important words, and when you have too many words, the weight of each word is lessened.

Title should be concise, direct, and to the point. Ideally, it should match as close to as possible what people would normally type into a search engine. If a person is planning for international travel, they would naturally type "international travel" into a search engine. Hence, "International Travel" or "International Travel Tips" would make a good title. Catchy and intriguing titles such as "Remember This before You Hop on a Plane to Another Country" may make good titles in magazines. But they are no good in terms of search engine optimization.

Hope this gives you a better understanding of how keywords in the title affects SEO.
