It will be able to give you a side-by-side comparison of the various key phrases for you to choose which phrase to optimize for. It can also be used to find heavily searched keyword phrases that have low level of competition.

The statistic and data are based upon the number of searches done through the Google search engine. And since Google has the largest search engine market share of over 60% of all the searches in the world, it has a lot of data. If you are looking at free tools, then this should be the primary free tool that you should rely on for your SEO activities.

Wordtracker.com has a series of SEO tools including Wordtracker Keywords, Wordtracker Link Builder, and Wordtracker Strategizer. Although there is a free trial, the tools are not free and require signup.

The Wordtracker keyword tool is similar to the Google External Keyword Tool. It focuses on obtaining long-tail keywords and related keywords for you. It shows the competition of the key words. And it also shows the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) of the keyword, giving you a single number to gauge how good a particular keyword phrase is.

Like Wordtracker, Nichebot.com helps you discover long-tail keywords. It combines four different databases to do this, including Google data and Wordtracker data.

Nichebot is not a free tool. But nichebotclassic.com is a free "lite" version of that tool which allows up to 20 keyword searches per day. It does require a signup.

NicheWatch.com

NicheWatch is a free SEO tool. Type in a keyword and it will provide you with the top competition for that keyword. It will show the competitor's number of backlinks, page rank, the number of keyword occurrences, and more.

The tool even has a Firefox add-on extension.
